The problem of evil reconstructed as a sequence of argument forms—showing that the famous debate is also a course in how arguments work.

Round one is deductive. The logical problem of evil claims a strict inconsistency: an omnipotent, perfectly good God would prevent all evil; evil exists; therefore no such God exists. As a form, it aims at validity—if the premises hold, the conclusion cannot fail. Attack it, then, the only way valid arguments are attacked: at a premise.
