The Course, One Thread

College algebra is one story told twice — first about numbers, then about functions — and every chapter extends the last without breaking it.

The number story runs from counting to completion. Naturals gain zero, negatives, fractions; the irrationals fill the line; and when x² + 9 demanded a root no real number owned, the imaginary unit arrived under the old constitution — commuting, associating, distributing like every citizen before it. Each extension was loyalty, not decree: zero and negative exponents exist to keep the quotient rule true, and i exists so every quadratic surrenders. The function story then retells everything one level up. A function is the machine — one input, one output — and the families parade through in order of temperament: lines change by constant difference, parabolas turn once, polynomials turn by their degree, rational functions carve the plane with walls and holes, and exponentials change by constant ratio, outrunning them all. Logarithms close the parade as the exponentials' inverses, every log law an exponent law in the mirror. The two stories meet in the unit that solved for meetings: a system is several conditions on the same numbers, and its solution methods are the equation laws of the first story deployed on the objects of the second. Under both stories runs one spine — the check. Substitute the solution back. Test the identity on numbers. Audit the candidate in the original. Multiply the factoring out. The course's receipts culture is not decoration; it is the mathematics, and a learner who keeps only the habit of checking has kept the best of the five hundred forty numbers.
