An even function satisfies f(−x) = f(x), symmetric across the y-axis; an odd function satisfies f(−x) = −f(x), symmetric through the origin.

x² is even: (−2)² = 4 = 2². x³ is odd: (−2)³ = −8 = −(2³). Most functions are neither.
