The Scientific Method as a Process

The scientific method is the iterative process by which chemists move from observation to explanation: observe a phenomenon, form a testable hypothesis, design and run an experiment, then revise the hypothesis against the results.
A chemist notices metal bolts near the coast corrode faster than inland bolts. She hypothesizes that salt air increases corrosion, exposes matched bolts to salt spray and dry air, and measures corrosion after a fixed time. The salt-sprayed bolts corrode more, supporting the hypothesis — but she still repeats the test with fresh bolts and a control group before trusting the result, because one trial could reflect an unrelated variable.
The process is not a rigid five-step checklist marched through once. Real work loops back constantly — an unexpected result sends the chemist back to redesign the experiment or reword the hypothesis, sometimes more than once, and a single supporting trial is never treated as proof.
