The Anatomy of Civic Error
to the StudyWalks catalog
The course's error twins sort into three families, and knowing the families catches errors the course never named.
Family one: directness errors — believing the system more direct than its design. The United States as a direct democracy (Gov 008), the popular vote electing the president (Gov 216), most bills becoming laws (Gov 327), court rulings enforcing themselves (Gov 430). The correction is always the same: find the machinery between the people and the outcome. Family two: text errors — attributing to the Constitution what practice, statute, or case law actually created. The filibuster (Gov 330), judicial review (Gov 415), the phrase "separation of church and state" (Gov 106), political parties (Gov 259). The correction is always the same: run the Gov 042 lookup, and when the words are not there, name the real source. Family three: pair conflations — two concepts sharing a neighborhood, fused by proximity. Deficit and debt (Gov 459), plurality and majority (Gov 214), proposal and ratification thresholds (Gov 041), impeachment and removal (Gov 364), liberties and rights (Gov 098), separation of powers and checks and balances (Gov 033). The correction is always the same: state both definitions and watch them separate. Three families, one diagnostic: when a civic claim feels off, ask — too direct? in the text? two things fused?
A taxonomy of errors is itself checkable — every member named above has its numbered correction sitting adjacent.
